Austin was trying to bury his new toy under the big overgrown rose bush in the vacant lot. You couldn't tell it now, but once upon a time this bush had been the prized flowering roses of a caring and careful gardener. It still bloomed heavy blood-red roses with wicked thorns spreading along its woody branches to protect it from marauders.
The bush took up a large section of the ragged, misused yard. It was surrounded by other less showy shrubs but just as large. One could stoop behind its protective arms and not be seen. Although you were sure to get pierced from the large deadly thorns.
Austin thought the bush could probably hide tons of buried treasure. The lot itself had been abandoned years before and most of the kids in the neighborhood steered clear of it. Someone had meant to rebuild a house there; had indeed started what was now a broken and crumbly foundation; but bad times being as they were, they had let it all go to waste.
Now all that remained was a semi-cleared hole in the ground, and a scattering of overgrown underbrush, tall bushes and a big spreading rose bush. Everyone had started to use the dead lot as their own personal garbage dump.
An old mattress was discarded in one corner and miscellaneous parts to some old cars were in another. Whatever anyone didn't want but had no good way to get rid of was dumped on the lot.
Austin dug harder and with every hot breeze that blew across his cheek, he thought he would be found out. He understood if any of the other kids in the neighborhood found his toy, it would no longer be his. Austin knew he was lucky to have found it in the first place.
His mother fearful of all the things that could befall a ten-year-old boy in their neighborhood seldom let him roam around it alone. His eight year old brother Tyson was usually under his feet like hot melted asphalt; but this one time, he had managed to slip out of the house without him being aware.

Why I write -
It started in college when my English Lit professor gave me a ‘C’ on my paper on a Shakespeare play. He told me I had no imagination and didn’t know how to write with passion or depth.
I took that rejection to heart. What else was a 19 year old Black southern girl to do. That was a tenured professor, he must know what he was talking about. So I thought.
I never wrote another word until depression hit me dead on at the age of 50. Uncommunicative, my husband fed up with me said....if you can’t say out loud what is bothering you, then write it down. Those simple words were the catalyst that saved me and started me on this journey.
I write so others know they are not alone. I write to let others know I have been in their shoes. I write to tell my story of survival so others can have hope of survival also. I write to help myself and others who may read my words. I write because I have to.
I write everything my characters tell me to write. They speak to me and compel me to tell you their story.

Most of my poetry ends up on Instagram, but here is another one that came about after drinking too much Vodka late at night.
UNLOCKED
I locked it tight and threw away the key
Built high, strong steel walls around it
I boasted that none could penetrate
The thick tough exterior I hid in
I loathe the sunlight that makes it shine
This lie deeply ingrained in my spirit
Flushing the truth to the surface
A light that ruins the darkness
I keep it hidden, locked inside
So small the room it hides in
None knows it even exists
The pain you cause me
